Air Filters: Keeping Your Engine Clean and Efficient

The Dirt

Here in the great state of Utah, our ATVs, UTVs and dirt bikes often operate in dusty, muddy, or sandy environments, which makes air filter maintenance incredibly important. The air filter’s job is to prevent dirt, dust, and debris from entering the engine. However, over time, the filter becomes clogged, which restricts airflow and forces the engine to work harder, reducing overall efficiency. When airflow is restricted, your engine can't "breathe" properly, which results in reduced performance and higher fuel consumption. In severe cases, dirt can bypass the clogged filter and enter the engine, causing internal damage to pistons and cylinders.

Keep it Clean!

Regular cleaning or replacement of the air filter, depending on the level of exposure to dirt and debris, is necessary to maintain optimal performance. For riders who frequently encounter dusty trails or dirty conditions, checking the air filter after each ride is recommended. Ensuring that your air filter is clean will keep your ATV or UTV running efficiently, allowing the engine to receive the proper air-fuel mixture it needs for combustion. Preventative maintenance of the air filter not only protects your engine but also helps ensure smoother, more powerful rides.

Signs of a dirty filter

A dirty air filter in an ATV or UTV can cause performance issues. Here are some signs to look for:

  1. Reduced Power: Noticeable loss of acceleration or overall power.
  2. Poor Fuel Economy: Increased fuel consumption without a clear reason.
  3. Engine Misfires: Irregular engine performance or stalling.
  4. Unusual Engine Sounds: Increased noise or strange sounds from the engine.
  5. Black Smoke: Excessive black smoke from the exhaust indicates rich fuel mixture.
  6. Dusty Engine Compartment: Visible dust accumulation in and around the air intake.
  7. Warning Lights: Check engine or service lights may illuminate on the dashboard.
